People, in all their diversity and personal richness, form the heart and soul of the Yampa Valley. Steamboat Springs has a long history of diverse peoples making the valley their home. From the nomadic Ute tribe who summered in the area, to the first permanent settlers, to the rise of business and industry, to today’s growing community and world-class outdoor recreation, the people of Steamboat Springs are known for their genuine western hospitality and authentic spirit.

Like the Yampa River that continuously ebbs and flows through time, Steamboat Springs is a community constantly evolving. People are drawn to the area for its beautiful landscapes, wide-open spaces, four distinct seasons, and the strong sense of community. Despite pressures, the community has maintained its friendliness, hospitality and pioneering spirit.

With a history rooted in the American west, Steamboat Springs embraces a year-round mountain lifestyle; a western heritage that still holds strong generations later; an Olympian tradition spanning nearly a century; abundant outdoor recreation centered around the Yampa River, namesake mineral springs and miles of trails and open space; and a passion for taking care of its neighbors through a diversity of community organizations.

Future

While the future is yet to be written, based on Steamboat Springs’ heritage and history, it is believed to be one that will continue to be defined by the people and place. A history that will mix traditions with new technologies and ideas. A heritage that one hopes holds true to the authentic and genuine elements that have made Steamboat Springs a real community and one that continues to reach over ranch fences for each other.
