STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-March 15, 2024-The city has published the final January 2024 sales, use, accommodation, and STR tax report. The January 2024 sales taxes for the City of Steamboat Springs decreased by 4.29% compared to the January 2023 collections or an increase of $196,792. 

Year-to-date sales tax collection is 4.29% more than year to date through the same period last year. For the past 5 years, January collections represent about 9.92% of annual collections. 

When comparing this January to the same month last year the notable changes in collections by category are in grocery stores & other food sellers at 22.82%, utilities at -13.22%, and marijuana at -11.60% over last January. Changes were seen in most geographical area notably Highway 40 Corridor and Mountain area.

Accommodation Tax is primarily dedicated to local trail projects. A small amount each year is dedicated towards the marketing of these projects and capital improvements at Haymaker. January collections are 11.02% higher compared to the same period last year. Year-to-date accommodation tax collection is 11.02% more than in the same period last year.

Short-Term Rental tax (STR tax) is dedicated for use to increase the stock of affordable and attainable housing by providing incentives and contributions to facilitate the development of affordable and attainable housing at locations including, but not limited to, Brown Ranch and to provide funding for infrastructure associated with affordable and attainable housing, including without limitation, energy, stormwater, water, wastewater, and multi-modal transportation. January STR tax collection is 116.82% higher compared to January 2023 or an increase of $1,528,731. Year to date short- term rental tax collections is 116.82% more than year to date through the same period last year.

Building Use Tax is used to fund capital projects for the City of Steamboat Springs. This tax fluctuates depending on building permits issued, use tax reconciliations completed, and the size and number of developments in the City. January net use tax collections total $423,312.
