[ARCHIVED] Outdoor Water Efficiency Rebates Launched

Sprinkler system watering the lawn

STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, COLORADO-August 12, 2025-In a collaborative effort to promote sustainable water use and support community conservation goals, the city and Mount Werner Water & Sanitation District have launched a new Outdoor Water Efficiency Rebate Program.

“Outdoor water makes up about 30% of summer use, and nearly half of it is wasted,” said Water Resource Manager Julie Baxter. “This rebate program helps cut that waste by supporting smart irrigation upgrades.”

This initiative encourages residential, multi-family, and commercial property owners to upgrade their irrigation systems and adopt more efficient outdoor water practices.

Rebates are available to water customers within both the city and Mount Werner Water service areas who maintain an active, non-delinquent water account. Qualifying products include smart irrigation controllers, rain or soil moisture sensors, and high-efficiency sprinkler nozzles. Customers can also receive support for irrigation system evaluations conducted by WaterSense-certified professionals.

For multi-family and commercial properties, an irrigation efficiency evaluation is required to qualify for rebates. Single-family homeowners are encouraged, though not required, to schedule an evaluation to identify system inefficiencies and prioritize upgrades. All rebate applications must be submitted within 90 days of purchase and must include original receipts and any required documentation such as pre- and post-installation photos for controllers.

Once approved, rebates will be issued in the form of a check within 45 days. The rebate amount will not include taxes or installation costs. Please note that rebate amounts exceeding $600 are considered taxable income and will require a completed W-9 form. Rebates are issued on a first-come, first-served basis and are subject to the availability of program funds. New construction irrigation systems are not eligible, and inspections to verify installation before issuing rebate payments may be conducted.

This program supports the goals outlined in the 2020 Water Conservation Plan. The plan sets a target of reducing per-household water use by 10% by the year 2030, with an emphasis on increasing community resilience in the face of climate change, wildfire threats, and continued population growth.
